Doomsday Prepper's believe in Survivalism; a movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists or preppers) who are actively preparing for emergencies, including possible disruptions in social or political order, on scales from local to international. Survivalists often acquire emergency medical and self-defense training, stockpile food and water, prepare to become self-sufficient, and build structures (e.g., a survival retreat or an underground shelter) that may help them survive a catastrophe.
Anticipated disruptions may include:
The third wave of survivalism or now referred to as Doomsday Preppers began after the September 11, 2001 attacks and subsequent bombings in Bali, Madrid, and London. This resurgence of interest in survivalism appears to be as strong as the first wave in the 1970s. The fear of war, avian influenza, energy shortages, environmental disasters and global climate change, coupled with economic uncertainty, and the apparent vulnerability of humanity after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, has once again made survivalism popular. Preparedness is once more a paramount concern to many people who seek to stockpile supplies, gain useful skills, and develop contacts with like-minded people to learn as much as possible.
Many books have been published in the past few years [2008-2012] offering survival advice for various potential disasters, ranging from an energy shortage and crash to nuclear or biological terrorism. In addition to the 1970s-era books, blogs and Internet forums are popular ways of disseminating survivalism information. Online survival websites and blogs discuss survival vehicles, survival retreats, emerging threats, and list survivalist groups.
Economic troubles emerging from the credit collapse triggered by the 2007 US subprime mortgage lending crisis and global grain shortages have prompted a wider cross-section of the populace to prepare. James Wesley Rawles, the editor of SurvivalBlog and author of the survivalist novel Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse was quoted by the New York Times in April 2008, stating: "interest in the survivalist movement 'is experiencing its largest growth since the late 1970s'". In 2009, he was quoted by the Associated Press as stating: "There's so many people who are concerned about the economy that there's a huge interest in preparedness, and it pretty much crosses all lines, social, economic, political and religious. There's a steep learning curve going on right now."
The advent of H1N1 Swine Flu in 2009 piqued interest in survivalism, significantly boosting sales of preparedness books and making survivalism more mainstream Events such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami have revitalized the survivalist community.
These developments led Gerald Celente, founder of the Trends Research Institute, to identify a trend that he calls "neo-survivalism". He explained this phenomenon in a radio interview with Jim Puplava on December 18, 2009:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn't seem like a federal agency with a sense of humor, but this year it used a joke to get attention. They put out a guide for a zombie apocalypse at www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies.htm.
In all seriousness, they have left the site up because officials said if people are prepared for zombies, they are pretty much prepared for anything. For zombies, doomsday, volcanoes, tornadoes and beyond, this is what the CDC says every family needs to have:
• Water (1 gallon per person per day)
• Food (stock up on nonperishable items that you eat regularly)
• Medications (prescription and nonprescription)
• Tools and supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery-powered radio, etc.)
• Sanitation and hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)
• Clothing and bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)
• Important documents (copies of your driver's license, passport and birth certificate, to name a few)
• First aid supplies (Although you're a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane.)
As a prepper, I am always concerned about my water source. Part
of your bug out/get out of dodge plan should include finding a
water source. Hopefully, you already have a GOOD plan and have
figured out your water ‘situation’. Often, we forget that our water
supply should be sufficient enough for drinking, cleaning, and
cooking. That is why this water storage tank is awesome. A tank
will carry plenty of water to clean and cook with. If properly
cleaned and lined, you can use this tank for drinking water. We
think the best feature on a portable water tank are the wheels.
This is one less thing to carry when you are planning to get out of
town.
*Water battles, Non perishable Food, First Aid kit, Flashlight
and Batteries, Lighter and Matches(keep matches in sealed plastic
bag) Thermal Blankets and personal hygiene items. All at least a 3
days supply.
These kits should be prepared one per each house member.
They are the first and most important kit in order to survive in
any emergency situation that forces any family away from
home.
*Dehydrated Food, Non perishable, Freeze Dried food. Use Sealed
buckets when packing. 3 servings per person per day enough for
expected time of survival.
*Water. Without water humans can't survive long. Gather at least 1/2 gallon per day per person. Better kept in glass containers, otherwise use plastic.
*First Aid kits, any medication you or your family members are taking. A book or guide on medical and first aid treatments could come handy. Check the expiration dates on all pills and medicine.
*AM/FM Radio, flashlights, batteries, Matches. Lighters and lighter fluid.
*Hygiene items such as bath soaps, tooth paste, feminine items, etc. To avoid sickness from infections.
*Weapon for self-defense (prior training with hand guns is a must needed factor). Ammo.
*Generators/ Water filtration system/ Alternative energy equipment such as solar power panels/ Survival guide/ Vegetable seeds and others that can be planted for future consumption/ Gas masks.
*Remember your pet's needs also. Food and medication and any other special needs.
Working on a community survival plan is recommended. When working on a trusted group, daily survival will become easier, protection and skills will be shared, and labor will be more productive.
If land is available, preparing a Bunker, building an animal shelter and planting trees that will flourish every year with minimum maintenancefor your growing zone that are are easy to maintain and will provide must needed nutrients and vitamins without much effort and in a natural way.
One of the biggest concerns Preppers have is their personal safety, specifically, after a catastrophic event. We have all witnessed what happens when civilization begins to collapse. Whether a natural disaster or a nuclear bomb triggers the collapse, people who are not prepared will be desperate to find those who have been prepping. I’m not saying that everyone ‘else’ is the enemy. I’m simply stating that desperate people are capable of doing crazy things to survive. For this reason, I thought barbed wire was an appropriate prepper item.
The Unimog can
conquer many types of terrain. This Vehicle is extremely versatile
and is used in over 20 countries. Most people don’t realize that
this isn’t just a Military vehicle. The Unimog is an exceptional
farming tool. The Unimog can be fitted with all kinds of tools and
excavation equipment. For this reason, some people refer to the
Unimog as the ‘Swiss Army Knife of Vehicles’.
Today, the
Northeast is anticipating the arrival of a, potentially, historical
winter storm. While we are hopeful that everyone has prepared for
this severe weather occurrence, realistically, we know that many
people do not plan ahead for this kind of event. Winter storms can
be completely devastating. A Winter Storm can leave us
helpless and isolated in our homes. This is why we all need to plan
ahead and prepare our home for a natural disaster. You should
always have 72 hours worth of emergency supplies in your
home.
